reading nefes, the Bektashi
spiritual hymns and poems.
In nefes, this 'breath of
spirit', the feelings and
devotion toward one's
particular murshid are
endlessly evoked and
elaborated. The Bektashis
see the power of a nefes as an
actualisation of the
relationship with the
murshid. Verbal and poetic
interaction is highly valued
among Bektashis - and among
Albanians and other peoples
temporarily uncorrupted by
modern fear of real
communication."
